It seems that the line between nouveau riche and the actual elite is blurring as each day passes. With the number of entrepreneurs and successful business ventures in Cairo, we have more and more newly rich families and young individuals that are blurring the line between the two.
How so?
WIth the everchanging fashion fads, including hipster and the crazy mismatching of patterns and colors these days, even those that may appear "baladi" may actually be considered "fashionable". Think about the trashiness of Paris Hilton, who comes from old money, and while we know she's not Egyptian, it's the easiest analogy without using people's names in Cairo. Paris Hilton sometimes wears things considered so baladi that we can't believe that she comes from a legacy of old money, yet, it's "trendy". We have the same problem here, fashion is blurring the line.
BUT The way we see it, no car, no designer purse or shoes, accessories, or straightened hair can cover up the nouveau riche. The line may be blurred to the young and or the ignorant, but those that come from class, can tell.
What do you guys think?? Do you think it's obvious or no longer an issue?
