So we're sure this is really going to press some buttons but we can't hold it back any further - are you ashamed to be Egyptian?

Facebook and Twitter is oversaturated with Egyptian society's posting of English songs, American TV shows, books, trends, etc. It's like our society is trying so hard to keep up with the western world that it made us wonder - are you ashamed of being Egyptian? When was the last time you supported an Egyptian film the way you do an American film, or an Egyptian book the way you celebrate "Twilight"?

While we admit that a large percentage were raised outside and also admit that Egyptian movies and shows usually suck in comparison, we have yet to see an AUC'ian or who's who support their own Egyptian anything! From TV shows to inside jokes to even catchphrases - "I.Die." Come on, seriously? Just because you see it on Jersey Shore or Twitter it's cool?

As we feel most of your blood boiling to this posting, we aim to clarify that we won't deny we do the same. We won't deny that Western culture is just more interesting when it comes to media, music, and the such. BUT, what we will comment on is the extreme attempt to adopt western trends and the complete lack of adopting anything that is Egyptian. We have yet to see one person admire an Egyptian novel or independent movie, which are good by the way if you step outside your Perez Hilton bubble.

Plus, if you think the Egyptian film industry sucks then why don't you work to change that? You all have the ability, education, AND resources.

There's always the Twitter wishes of what's abroad. Little do you know that those living abroad lack the culturual depth that Egypt provides us. Wishing for American food? First of all, Mcdonalds is better here so that's one thing. Secondly, yeah, Cheesecake factory is f'ing good, BUT while you can get a good cheesecake anywhere in the world, only one country has the flavor of our food that is only good in Cairo.

We love Western society, we do and we won't lie. But we also love Egyptian art, Egyptian and Arab independent films, novels, etc. And we're ashamed that our high society is so busy trying to be Americanized that they've ignored the beauty of their own things until an American comes to Egypt and admires it for you.
