Okay this post is definitely not targeted to those in the states...this is about a new trend in Egypt that we're noticing...

In America, when Sarah Smith makes Billy Bob, it is common that she changes her name legally to Sarah Bob. In Egypt, we culturally tend to stick to our family names regardless of marriage. You may be referred to as "Madame [husband's last name]" but at the end of the stay, you stay Sarah Smith Mohamed if that's how you were born.

Now...recently and we blame much of this on Facebook, everyone's changing their names! and we're pretty sure it's just on FB, not legally.

It goes with the whole "I can't wait to change my fb marital status" trend where girls are hyphenating their last names to include their husbands. Generally, this wouldn't be a weird thing if it were common in Egypt...but it's not guys, who are we fooling?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it but since we are used to most every Egyptian woman that we know still goes by her family's last name...we found this new trend interesting. We definitely attribute it to this new generation of social networking and Facebook.
