Waka Waka..Watch It Here

June 12, 2010

So the World Cup officially kicked off last night and as football frenzy continues to escalate, everyone has been asking us for our recommendations on where to watch them.

So after spreading out the team last night all over Cairo here are the places we recommend:

  • El Shagara: Formerly known as Sangria, the new garden area has been renovated and taken over by Mr. Ganzoury himself...Chill in the garden with a drink in one hand and your shisha in the other, while overlooking the Nile.
  • font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Fairmont Nile City: Wherever you are in the Fairmont, you won't be able to get away from the world cup, be it in the Lower Lobby or at Bar Kaya on the roof. We definitely recommend the latter, breathtaking views of Cairo shisha and drinks on the roof, no better way to do it.
  • Mojo Lounge: No matter where you are in Cairo, you'll find one of Cairo's most relaxing lounges near you. If your near the Zamalek area or Katameyya, you'll find one of Cairo's most buzzed about locations. Want to feel the world cup fever definitely head out there.
  • Sequoia: If there ever where a place that people love regardless, it would be Sequoia! Where all of everyone's Ramadan's and football games are watched. We don't need to vouch for the place as you have all been there a million times.
  • Cairo Jazz - Just want a drink instead of shisha and the whole cafe experience, then why not give Cairo Jazz a chance. Happy Hour is from 7-9 p.m. so you can definitely throw back a few while watching your favorite team win.
  • L'Aubergine: Another bar that has kind of been out of the picture for awhile, but seems to be an old favorite and one of those all around chill places. Grab yourself a corner and a drink, without having to worry about the crowd and who's there!

Entitled Youth

June 12, 2010

We are a generation that cries for attention, don't get us wrong sometimes those cries bring a lot of unique out of the box ideas...

Yet another "fashion" oriented website has popped up in the Egyptian online world, but we have to admit this one definitely grabbed our attention. Edgier with an outsiders take on the glitzy and glamorous world!

www.entitledyouth.com

"Entitled Youth an online platform founded in Cairo, Egypt and curated by a collective group of contributors who come together to publish everything fashion to film, with an aim to bridge the gap between alternative and mainstream art. Entitled is about promoting new talent from the region as well as internationally. It was founded on three basic ideas: opportunity, quality and selection. The purpose of the platform is to encourage more artists to show their work, as well as providing a source of inspiration for younger creative minds. Entitled is making internships and job opportunities in various fields available to young students locally as well as to those studying abroad. Entitled also commissions its own shoots, in addition to working with various stores and boutiques on their campaigns and collections.

Entitled Youth also runs a creative studio, building its own in-house fashion label with collaborations and submissions by artists and featuring different designers. Every piece is handmade and tailored to the smallest, finest details"

Exclusive news given to S&H, Entitled is launching its own collection soon, and like most of you know (since we featured it yesterday) they recently did a collaborative shoot with Helene Boutique too, and it's featured exclusively on the site.

HerSay

June 12, 2010

It may be about 7 months or so late, but we stumbled upon one of Cairo's favorite author's Sex and the City spoof on HerSay (think the arab version of The View)

Check out Amy Mowafi's segment, you know as an author she did something right when everyone wanted a piece of her!

The Ban Begins

June 12, 2010

">

And it begins!

Slowly but surely, a number of countries have banned smoking in certain public areas, but we honestly never thought we’d see the day in Egypt where you’re not allowed to smoke!

That day has arrived.

In Alexandria, Egypt.

They are officially the first city in the country to ban smoking in government buildings.

We all know that smoking is a huge problem here, but did you know that Egyptians smoke up to something like 19 billion cigarettes a year!? A bit much, don’t you think?

The ban will begin limited to just government buildings, but they say that within a couple of years, it’ll be banned even to cafes…wait, does that include shisha too?

While we know this is going to be really hard and resisted by many of our cig addicts, this is definitely a great step forward towards better public health!
